“This beautiful record is the soundtrack for your trip to a wind blown desert world. Future earth? Layers of unsettling violin and viola melodies with occasional wordless voice invite you into the dark…abyss…See you there.”
-Thor Harris, Thor & Friends
“Treason to Our Nature” is the debut album of Nøkken + The Grim, recorded from 2017-2018, combining composed music with live improvisation at The Thicket in Austin, Texas. Each track is composed of both live performances recorded at The Thicket as well as studio recordings.
The album expresses interconnections to nature and nonhuman animal life in contemporary times, delivered through a narrative of an ongoing war between Mother Nature and industrialized civilization. In the middle of this conflict, three nature spirits, Nøkken, the shapeshifter, Peryton, the black stag, and Ajatar, the witch of the woods, find themselves channeling songs of old mingling with new electronic frontiers to summon back humanity’s vital connection to the living world. The music snakes between styles in a surreal, animalistic revelry, drawing heavy influence from metal, folk, blues, modern classical and Norse and Magyar folklore. Nøkken + The Grim’s primalist music pulls from the undercurrents of animal sensing and being prior to explicit categories and seeks to present raw experiences through wordless music.
The intertwining of nature and technology is reflected in the composition of the tracks themselves which weave together the raw organism of animal being with synthetic soundscapes.
