“There is an aura around the American neofolk band Nøkken + The Grim. The cry of thunder, the animal shuffle through the trees, the underlying soundtrack of the forest.”
- Ablaze Ansuz
“To put them under one genre would be considered a grave sin. Soaked in mythological elements and Pagan backgrounds, each member of Nøkken + The Grim brings their own unique flair…”
-Brutal Resonance
Nøkken + The Grim brings to the stage primal rhythms and dark rituals calling forth our animalistic natures, the horror and beauty of the wilderness. Led by the devilish fiddler Fehérló Gortva, they are a neofolk and dark electronic band hailing from Austin, Texas, performing in animal masks and furs and invoking pagan beliefs and shapeshifters of folklore. They performed the southwestern premiere of Evil Dead: The Nightmare Reimagined (1981) with Hollywood composer Joseph LoDuca himself at MondoCon2019, and currently they are producing the music for the indie horror film Blight. Other notable performances include SXSW with Bekon (producer for Kendrick Lamar), Austin Witchfest, YXSB, Eeyore’s Birthday Party and opening for drag superstar Louisianna Purchase. Equally at home on the stage and the recording studio, Nøkken + The Grim has recorded on numerous film scores with composer Brian Satterwhite, including Boneyard Alaska (2019), The Mark of War (2018), The Next Kill (2018), Sour Bear (2018), and Paper Birds (2020). Their extensive work in the film industry has shaped their sound and theatrical stage performance, and they count among their influences the bands Wardruna, Heilung, Garmarna, Scandinavian metal, and Norse and Magyar mythology. Their music focuses on themes of respect for more-than-human Life and Land, resistance to oppression, and the ancient animal spirits who came before humankind.
Nøkken + The Grim’s discography includes three albums: Black Sparrow Sessions (2020), Bestiengesang (2019), Treason To Our Nature (2018)—an EP: Trickster God (2018)—and three singles: Harangoznak Vecsernyére (2021), Vox Terrae (2019), and Overhead Freeway (2018). They’ve been featured on two compilations: In Solidarity and Left/Folk II. And they’ve released a folk horror short film directed by Andrew Savage.
“When the neofolk band Nøkken + The Grim take the stage, an air of beautiful confusion sets in among the uninitiated…It is folk and ritual music molded into an ecstatic frenzy, alternating between uplifting nature worship and the soundtrack to a sylvan horror film.”
